When we purchased our dream property located on the cliff top near Devonport on Auckland’s North Shore, the property was in need of a serious renovation to realise its full potential so we began the process of identifying architects and builders who might be able to help us. Our chosen architect came up with a bold and ambitious design that essentially required re-building the house with the exception of a few of the exterior walls. For this job we selected Tony Pexton of TP Builders Limited. Our choice was based largely on word of mouth recommendations and a quick look at some of Tony’s completed projects. As novices in the building process we really were taking a leap of faith and we certainly were not disappointed.

The first stage of the process was to get some idea of what our project was going to cost. Tony and his quantity surveyor produced a very detailed costing which although scary initially allowed us to re-adjust our budget expectations. As the project progressed and we ticked off the various work items we were able to compare the actual cost against the budgeted cost and we were very pleased when the project came in only slightly over budget. As is usual with any renovation project there were additional costs from unexpected items but thankfully there were not too many of these. The other variations from budget were generally due to changes in the specification as the project progressed. The other thing that we really appreciated about Tony’s approach to the project was that he would often come up with ideas to save us money or to modify the designs to improve the finished product, things we would never have thought of ourselves.

Many building projects end up taking much longer than expected but ours finished pretty much on time which was down to Tony’s organisational skills and his excellent team of tradespeople. Tony assumed responsibility early on in the process for project managing the entire job. We have no doubt that this alone contributed immensely to the success of the project and we were often amazed at Tony’s ability to just ‘get things done’.

As for the quality of the finished product, we are very satisfied customers. The project has been a huge success and we now have a fantastic home in a fantastic location. Our home won a Master Builders Gold award for Tony’s work which is testimonial in itself to the build quality but we have since come to appreciate even more the real benefits of Tony’s attention to detail and very high standards in the building process as we enjoy living in the house.

In summary, we have no hesitation in recommending TP Builders to other prospective clients.

I first met Tony Pexton when his company TP Builders Ltd submitted a quote along with other builders to construct our new Alan Shanahan designed home in Devonport.

From the outset and throughout the construction process Tony was very passionate about delivering us a high quality home that included various features desired by and important to us and he was very collaborative and innovative with us as we moved through a process that was familiar to him but new to us. This enabled us to enhance our original spec beyond what we had at first envisaged.

He showed us a number of homes he had previously built and it was nice to be able to access them which in itself was as a result of the owners consideration for Tony’s capabilities.

The building site was well controlled at all times with rubbish continually being promptly moved away and noise kept within acceptable levels.

We were very fortunate to have TP Builders construct our new house. From the outset Tony was reliable, honest and very professional.

During the planning phase he offered sensible advise and opened up his extensive portfolio of previous projects for perusal. Despite numerous obstacles, including neighbours at close proximity, shared right-of-way and commencing foundations in the middle of winter on a section too small to “swing a cat”, construction progressed without incident and within budget.
